24/7 DIARY ENTRY

Dear Diary
January 15
Were you expecting an uneventful order with Lands' End?  Where most people would probably click, select and checkout within 5-10 minutes, I like to play with some of the toys at LandsEnd.com that allow me to simulate the type of product analysis that I would do either over the telephone or in a bricks-and-mortar store.

One item that I purchased was a backpack for Ben.  He needs one with greater carrying capacity.  I noticed a backpack in the overstocks section that appeared similar to one listed in the regular priced section.  I fired up Lands' End Live for some assistance.

Jenni W:               Thank you for using Lands' End Live! How may I help you?
Bruce Weinberg:  Hello Jenni, I have a question about a kid's junior collegiate backpack...
Bruce Weinberg:  Is there a difference between the one that is listed in the overstock section
Bruce Weinberg:  and the one that is listed at full price in the regular section?
Bruce Weinberg:  The URL for the overstock one is http://www.landsend.com/cd/frontdoor/
                           0,2084,AREA=OVS; ITEM=100001_5050__5100_5157_12462__15;
                           DATA=WK,00.html?sid=0947901145166
Bruce Weinberg:  Thank you
Jenni W:              One moment please.
(The moment lasted about 3-5 minutes.)
Bruce Weinberg:  Hope you don't mind if I just like to post things as I wait so I don't get bored.
Jenni W:               It looks like that the more expensive one is a newer model and it is 1/2
                            of an inch deeper.
Jenni W:              Other than that, they are practically the same.
Jenni W:              Was there anything else I could help you with?
Bruce Weinberg:  The newer one did talk about ease in zipping. The "older" one is likely the same in
                            this department.
Bruce Weinberg:  Whoops, that was a question.
Jenni W:               No, the newer one is the one that has that but not the older version.
Bruce Weinberg:   Perhaps a crazy question...is the older one problematic when it comes to zipping?
Jenni W:               Not that I have heard of
Bruce Weinberg:  Thank you very much. You've been a great help.
Jenni W:               Thank you for using Lands' End Live and have a nice night.

I ordered also some sweat pants for both boys.  Later, I checked in with Lands' End Live again.  It took a long time for the chat window to come up.  A window from Cisco systems, the firm that owns WebOnLine, came up at some point while I was waiting.  This has to be a bug in the system as it was very weird to see.

Mary Jo B:      Welcome to "Lands' End Live". How can I assist you today?
bruce w:          hallelujah, a few questions coming, thanks.
Mary Jo B:      Go ahead with them anytime.
bruce w:          1) I want to get sweat pants in 3T and 4T.
bruce w:          I suspect that the kids in small is 4T.
Mary Jo B:      Ok just a moment I will look for them for you.
Mary Jo B:      Are these for a boy or girl?
bruce w:          Boys
(I entered in another question while I was waiting and our conversation shifted to this topic.)
bruce w:          My other question has to w/ monogramming.
bruce w:          I selected a junior collegiate backpack in cobalt from the overstock.
bruce w:          I wanted to have my son's first name monogrammed on it.
bruce w:          When I clicked on the link to get info, it comes back as nonexisting page.
bruce w:          Where can I go to learn about the variety of lettering options.
bruce w:          I don't know the difference between block lettering or circle, etc.
Mary Jo B:      Let me see if I can sent that page out to you.
bruce w:          go ahead
Mary Jo B:      Let me know when you receive it.
bruce w:          Thanks on the monogramming page, got it...still a question.
Mary Jo B:      Yes?
bruce w:          If I want to spell out his first name, Ben or as BEN...I better not pick, 1,2, 3, 5
                       or 8 options, yes?
bruce w:          Can I specify all capitals? For example, option #4 looks fine. Does that option
automatically assume that the first letter is capitalized and all others in lower case,
or can I specify all capitals...sorry
Mary Jo B:      Just type it in in all caps and at the end of the order there will be a place for
                       additional comments.
Mary Jo B:      Just write in that space that you want the Name in all caps.
bruce w:          Thank you...now, we can talk about the sweats.
Mary Jo B:      I'm sending you out a page with sweat pants on it the small is a 4 (equivalent to a 4T)
bruce w:          got it, thank you. And for the 3T? Is it listed as fleece or actually as sweat
Mary Jo B:      There are several options.  I was not able too find anything in the toddler sizes for boys.
bruce w:          hmmm, we definitely have and have ordered sweats in 3T before
bruce w:          Maybe, I'll check the catalog
Mary Jo B:      They are listed as fleece but are the "sweat pants".
Mary Jo B:      I will check further if you have time.
bruce w:          I have some time, thank you
bruce w:          They look like sweat pants to me in the picture, thought they are listed as sweats
bruce w:          I mean they look like sweats in the picture, though they are listed as "fleece"
Mary Jo B:      That is correct.
bruce w:          Ok, I'm not at the page now...I can specify 3T, right?
Mary Jo B:      That would be in toddlers. I've come up with a number just a moment.
Mary Jo B:      This is the number - they are not on the internet, but you can put that number in the
catalog quick order field and order like that .
Mary Jo B:      I have navy in stock barn red, black & gray heather are backordered until the end
                       of January.
bruce w:          I didn't see the number
bruce w:          (I'm still here, don't worry :-)
Mary Jo B:      OOPS > I guess I need to give you the number - 51278B33
bruce w:          so, can I make this part of my internet order, or do I need to do the order for
                       51278B33 offline?
Mary Jo B:      You can order them right with the rest of your internet order. Would you like me
to send out the form for you (online)
bruce w:          I'm going to run to dinner...can I find the form on my own later?
Mary Jo B:      Great - just click on the intelligent order blank.
Mary Jo B:      Enjoy your dinner!
bruce w:          Thank you very much for your help. That was the longest Lands' End OnLine
Chat I've ever had. Great show.
Mary Jo B:      My pleasure! Thanks for using "Lands' End Live".
bruce w:          Cheers.

I also ordered some twin sheets for the boys.  When I initially tried to order "2" fitted sheets, it was not able to fill my order.  Perhaps this was a computer error.  I tried again.  No luck.  Sometimes one needs to think like a computer scientist, which is not fair to expect of the mass market.  Anyway, I tried ordering "1" fitted sheet, and it took the order.  I simply ordered "1" fitted sheet again for a total order of "2" fitted sheets.

Incidentally, I am a registered user of Gomez and they are offering a rebate of 7% for a Lands' End order that originates through Gomez.com (i.e., 1) go to Gomez.com, 2) go to their savings center, 3) sign in, 4) they send you to Lands' End, 5) be sure to purchase during that session.).  This is the first time that I have tried this with Gomez; I'll see how they do.

The Homeruns order came on time as promised today; and they placed the items on the counters.  They also tracked in some snow and dirt (on Thursday, it snowed about 6" in the Boston area).  I quickly got down on my hands and knees, paper towels in hand, and cleaned the floor before Amy could see the dirty floor.  After cleaning the floor, I called Amy in to see the order, "Homeruns, doing another fine job.  And look at the floor;  it's as clean as a whistle.  I think we'll want to keep them."
