24/7 DIARY ENTRY

Dear Diary
September 1
UPS, wassup, this Brucie is for you.  I had to move my office contents from Boston (the location of my Boston University office) to Waltham (the location of my Bentley College office) by September 1, and given the heavy moving activity in the Boston area (over 250,000 students move in about now), moving vans and the like were unavailable and movers were booked solid.  I was dreading the thought of doing the move myself.  Enter stage left, Jonathan Hibbard who recommended UPS and enter stage right, UPS for making the move happen in one day and at an incredible price.  UPS was available to help me with my move as long as I set everything up by 8:30pm the night before the move; while others said "sorry, we are all booked up for weeks," UPS said, in spirit, "bring it on, we love to move stuff and hey, we're friendly too."

UPS moved thirteen boxes with a total weight over 500 pounds, using ground service, overnight from Boston to Waltham for $139.80.  Is that amazing or what?  The move was completed overnight because Waltham is so close to Boston.  Were a rental van available, my guess is that the total price would have been at least $100-$150 (after taxes, gas, mileage tax, other fees and taxes), not to mention the hours of lugging I would have had to perform, all of the Gatorade I would have consumed during the move and all of the pizza I would have consumed after completing the move (and I would have probably been very sore for a few days -- the hot bath would still have felt good).  I also estimate that the minimum charge by a reputable and reasonable moving company would have been at least $500.

UPS did require that I weigh and measure the dimensions of each box and that I pack and secure them properly.  After that, I simply left the boxes in my office for them to pick up (with a check in the amount of $139.80) and the next day they were delivered directly into my new office.  Who knew?  One can obtain shipping costs using the UPS "Quick Cost" feature.  My boxes were considered a "One Time Pickup."  I loved their service. My back and Amy are glad that UPS made for a terrific move.

Luis Castillo RBI Watch (Through September 1, 2000)

Number of Hits......Batting Average......Number of RBI......Runs Scored
......153.......................353............................11........................83

Luis went 3-5 with one rbi and scored two runs as the Marlins  defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-7 in eleven innings.  Luis leadoff with singles in the first, third and fifth innings.  In the sixth inning, with one out and the bases loaded, Luis hit into a fielder's choice to the shortstop which knocked in a run (the man going to second base was out); oh, the irony of Luis getting an rbi on a fielder's choice and not on one of his three hits for the game.  In the eighth inning with one out and men on the corners (i.e., first and third), he drew a walk.  With two outs and no one on base, he struck out to end the tenth inning.  (These data are from ESPN.com)
